#artlife , Winnipeg edition

I just got back from Winnipeg, hanging our 6th exhibition of 2012. Whenever I think of my own #artlife or #scroungyjammer lifestyles , I often wonder how the fuck the “pros” manage. ‘Cause as an artist just one step above nobody, it seems like I’m always rushing to go somewhere or just coming back and getting to work on the next project. It seems people actually in demand must never sleep and always be heading to 3 zones at a time. I couldn’t be more pleased about jet setting to exotic locales like Rimouski , Winnipeg and Calgary , staying in hotels and mounting huge installs, chilling with cool cats and raiding all thrifties.

Drooled on my friends’ beautiful house, met the cutest dog in Manitoba, made new pals , got hosted in style by inspiring old pals , coffee dates with curators, gallery crawls and oh yeah , showed our own stuff but seeing a pelican up close was perhaps the best part. Afucking pelican! I came home with a shredder , a sunburn and a copy of Keith Richards’ Life. & a pile of clothes that was all in the 1$-3$ range.

Just hanging out with some of our work. Leggings from Simon’s 15$ , blouse from Renaissance 5$ , blazer swapped from Cheap Opulance , boots from Osborn , bracelets from Senegal Style (soooo cheap!) , make some friendship necklaces yourself , get friends to give em too.

The gallery we showed at had a sculpture gardens , these Michel De Broin ghosts where in in it , haunting up St Boniface. Silk tank top from Winnipeg Value Village , 3$ , skirt Cheap Opulance encore , hoops from a thrifty in Rimouski for a hot 99¢, tights from Winners , 4$. The director of the gallery asked if my crooked glasses where intentional , nope , I just happened to sit on them!

Factory Girl, Part 2

Pochahaunted tshirt maybe swapped when we played together? , selfmade necklaces , skirt and belt both from Cheap Opulance , shoes from Salvation Army in Alabama, 20$. Nitrile gloves for chemical protection. Lipstick is my new fave , Wet n’ Wild Megalast in Purty Persimmon. Vegan , cheap and loud. Kinda like me.
Bonhomme Carnavale artprint made by us , 100$.

Fear the drying rack! Cardigan from Renaissance, I am Providence tshirt made by & gifted from my pal James Quigley who has some insane art for sale at the link I just posted , giant geode on a earwire from the beadstore , skirt = Cheap Opulance. Lotsa bracelets + bitchface. Used drying rack from Cosmex Graphics

Daytime. Vintage lab coat = found in the street, lace tights 2$ from Simons’ and then dyed by me , Vegan Docs. Spatula from Dollarama.

Nighttime. Blazer from a garage sale, it sheds. Blouse from Cheap Opulance , shorts from Manfriend’s thrifted cords, belt found on the sidewalk and given to me by Montreal visual artist Jessica Mensch.

Meow.

Article about the afterlife of cheap clothes , kinda depressing.

In the way of spammy spam , the fella & I are trying to hustle flight funds for an #artlife trip to Calgary. Thus , Etsy sale on all our prints. Coupon code : fraisebec, the sale ends tonight.

Ladies Of The Hallway

2 ladies I love who have awesome style , in the hallway. Janky pics an’ everything.

Karine Cossette is a visual artist and all around badass. One of my favorite people who’s pretty much a pro at everything she tries (check the jams) , including looking awesome. Her blouse is from Shangrilalaland via an Old Wig vintage sale , 20$, and her jeans were 5$ at Renaissance & then modded.

Valerie Martino is better known as Unicorn Hard-On her tech-noise alterego of heavy and harsh beats. She played here recently and I’m hoping her move to Providence will mean more bode crossings. A true woman of mystery , Val didn’t tell me where she got her threads but the ombre hair and leopard on leopard are pretty much all you need to know.

Take Me To Your Dealer

You might have noticed that at least 1/2 of what I wear is from Cheap Opulance , well now Sarah is set up in the same building as me , just 4 floors down. Trouble is brewing.

Here the wizard master is in her zone of fabulous clothes.

As sartorial amazingness is just one of the many tools need to pursue my goal of international art star it’s a lucky coincidence that she seems to need all the screenprints , much in the same way that I require all the clothing.

Janky pics of racks of excellence, can you guess what 2 items in this pic are now mine?

I tried this dress on and it didn’t fit but you should buy it. Psychedelic cotton smock. 3 words that go together like whoa.

You can’t spend time in a spot like that and leave empty handed.

Pants and tee shirt both from Cheap Opulance. Lipstick is my own special homebrew , line to come. Vegan Docs can be bought in Montreal at X20 , I would like to request to Dr Martens shoes on behalf of all vegan ladies , vegan high heeled boots pretty please! The manfriend hates these pants , increasing my own love for them.

At twilight. This blazer from Cheap Opulance was literally thrust into my hands. Tee shirt from one of my fave bands , Puffy Areolas from Cleaveland. All the shirts of this batch were hand drawn with fabric markers , thanks Damon , you are the best. Everything else has already been posted.

And speaking of dealers , yesterday I was a dealer in my own right when a few studiomates and I got together to have a print sale/ open house. It was low key and pretty fun with friends and strangers stopping by. A lil’ experiment on our behalf to see how well we could do on the weekend of the big craft fair , well turns out we can do way better in our own studio and have a generally more mellow , more personal time. No lugging stuff around , no table fees , no waking up early, no music blasting out conversation and doublewide strollers shoving browsers aside. Yes on lingering , conversation , free jazz , tons and tons of iced teas and showing out work in progress to fellow artists. Go us.

Right now I’m looking for vests of all types to wear over my insane collection of band tshirts. Will be stalking the Winnipeg thriftys.

Post-Voivod , Metal Neck In Effect

As a scrounger a 21$ gig is a big deal to me. I bought advance tickets for me and the man friend months ago , selling off records from my teen years to do it.

And, it was so , so worth it. Voivod are the only band from Montreal , the only band from Quebec , one of the only bands from Canada to be a major influence on my own music making. They are an influence to many of my favorite bands. It was actually my first time seeing them , the boy had seen them a few times as a pup , lastly 16 years ago. They played all of Dimension Hatröss and sounded like a fucking machine. Except for my small crew , the crowd were pretty much all full time metalheads. Longhair , often grey , beard , back patches and lots of shaved heads and cargo pants. Probably one of the more civilized audiences I’ve seen at a loud gig , the grey hair might have much to do with it. I was able to get right in front without being shoved or elbowed , it was nothing short of amazing.

Here’s the album

Here’s my outfit.

Black blouse from Frip Prix , 4.99 , Customized blazer from Salvation Army + all the patches , Cut-off Levis I got for free at CMJ a million years ago when brands wanted to give noise rock bands free swag ,I covered them in vintage buttons, tights from Simons , shoes from Salvation Army in Birmingham, Al , 20$ , the most I’ve ever spent on anything thrifted. Lipstick is Tarred by OCC , the paper “brick” my hand is stuck in is just a tiny part of our upcoming exhibition in Manitoba.

Buttons.

My studiomates and I are having a print sale today , Saturday the 9th. Why not come say hello? Lately , my entire life is studio or sleep so come see me awake. Although in this re-exhibition prep time , my waking hours are half asleep at this point.
